In some reaches of the Pit River, many features of healthy streams are missing. Historic channelization and subsequent water fluctuations during the growing season inhibit streambank vegetation and weaken banks. When high winter flows begin, downcutting and/or lateral erosion degrade the channel further. Innovative solutions are needed to provide a reliable source of water for farming and ranching. These solutions must also restore the physical processes necessary for providing a full range of riparian functions: moderation of floods, increased soil moisture, and improved aquatic habitats.
